Clinical/Scholary Project Information
Clinical/Leadership Practicums
In the Doctor of Nursing Practice program there are four different course numbers/levels for clinical experiences. Prior to students beginning their clinical practicum they must have successfully completed N811 Advanced Pathophysiology, N601 Advanced Assessment, and N605 Pharmacotherapuetics for Advanced Practice Nurses.
- N728 Advance Practice Nursing Clinical Application & Role Development I
- N729 Advance Practice Nursing Clinical Application & Role Development II
- N828 Clinical Leadership III
- N829 Clinical Leadership IV
Overview N728 and N729 Clinical I & II:
Clinical I is the first in the series of clinical courses for the post BS to DNP student. The focus of Clinical I is to learn approaches to complicated, yet commonly occurring phenomena encountered in both primary and acute care settings. The ability to analyze and synthesize a variety of data while caring for patients with complex needs and multiple co-morbidities will be emphasized. Seminar discussions will be tailored to class content specific for the APN role and setting of the student. The focus of Clinical II is to incorporate advanced assessment skills and management skills with clients with more complex health problems. An emphasis is on the implementation and evaluation of clinical interventions, health promotion with clients with complex health issues, and the integration of cultural, psychosocial and relational factors that impact health status and management.
- N729 Enrollment Process:
- Students will be notified of their specific assigned clinical placement after the enrollment period has begun, so students should enroll in all other needed coursework while awaiting their clinical assignment.
- Students must be in compliance with health and safety requirements to be allowed to register.
- Students are notified by email of the class number to use to enroll for the appropriate course/section WHEN they are eligible to register.
Overview N828 and N829 Clinical Leadership III & IV:
In the clinical leadership course sequence, DNP students gain leadership experience in the CNS or NP role through the development of advanced level clinical judgment and systems approaches to clinical issues. The objectives for these clinical courses are based upon the Essentials of Doctoral Education for Advanced Practice Nursing and expand upon students existing clinical expertise to strengthen their leadership skills in interprofessional health care practices, translation and dissemination of research findings, and the ability to develop and influence healthcare policy. DNP students will work closely with the Clinical Leadership Course professor to identify a preceptor from an agency who will assist them in meeting the goals and objectives of the course.
Arranging a clinical placement can take longer than expected. The School of Nursing must notify the clinical agency before the start of the semester that a student will be there. There must also be an agency contract in place. All arrangements for a clinical experience for summer should be finalized by April 15 and for fall by July 1.

Scholary Project
The School of Nursing requires that all DNP students complete a scholarly project. The scholarly project is a capstone experience that demonstrates the synthesis of the student’s work and serves as a foundation for future scholarship. This project is completed over the course of two to three semesters in collaboration with students’ scholarly project mentors. The scholarly project may take a variety of forms. Some examples of a scholarly project include a need assessment and program evaluation plan, a quality improvement project, the translation of an established intervention into a practice site, or an evaluation of the impact of a self-care model. Students are expected to produce an oral presentation as well as a final written product that is suitable for publication in a peer-reviewed journal, book, or government report. Students will complete six credits of scholarly project as part of the DNP program. The scholarly project has a seminar component.
