Health Insurance Portability & Accountability Act Training

School of Nursing students are required to know about the health information privacy requirements of the federal Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). The HIPAA Privacy Rule went into effect beginning April 14, 2003. When students are at a health care facility for clinical training, the Privacy Rule as a member of the facility's work force covers them. A training site may require students to complete Privacy Rule training specific to that site. Students must follow that site's policies and procedures, including those concerning health information privacy when they are in clinical.

HIPAA Clinical Training Requirements for Students in the:

  • MS and DNP Programs
In order to become familiar with the HIPAA Privacy Rules, MS and post-masters students, prior to enrollment, are required to read the material regarding clinical training at the UW-Madison HIPAA website (http://www.hipaa.wisc.edu/trainingstudents.html). Once students have read the document, they should print out the first page of the document, sign their name somewhere on the page, and turn in the signed page to Academic Programs Office K6/146, Clinical Science Center. The Graduate Programs Office will remove the enrollment hold once the signed document is received.

  • Undergraduate Nursing Major
The School of Nursing uses the UWHC HIPAA and Confidentiality Agreement to meet privacy and confidentiality requirements because most of the students will have clinical at UWHC at some time during their program of study. See Related Links for UWHC HIPAA and Confidentiality Agreement.

  • Undergraduate BSN at Home Program
As a student in a clinical training program of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, you are required to learn about and abide by the health information privacy requirements of a federal law called HIPAA. Students are required to undergo privacy rule training, available on the UW-Madison HIPAA website (http://www.hipaa.wisc.edu/trainingstudents.html). After having read the document, students are required to print the first page, sign, and turn in to the Academic Programs Office, K6/146.

HIPAA Research Training Requirements

Undergraduate honors students and graduate students must all complete the research training requirement. If the research training component is not offered as part of the required research courses (N302 or N700) students must complete the module prior to enrollment in N681 Senior Honors Thesis (undergraduate honors students) or N798 Master’s Research Practicum (MS students).

It is recommended that students print off the step-by-step instructions (pdf) and use it as a guide when completing the HIPAA Research Training. The HIPAA training web site is located at http://hipaa.wisc.edu/courses/moodle/login/index.php
