The Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (ACNP) option is a specialty tract within the MS program at UW-Madison. Utilizing the outstanding interdisciplinary resources of the UW campus, the program of study for the ACNP prepares the advanced practice nurse to provide direct care to medically vulnerable patients with serious illness in a variety of settings, but with emphasis on acute or critical care. The program offers broad preparation in the management of acutely ill Adults with opportunities to concentrate on populations of special interest through coursework and supervised clinical practicums. Successful graduates will be prepared to:
•conduct comprehensive health assessments
•order and interpret diagnostic tests
•manage health problems and disease
•coordinate care during transitions
•work independently and collaboratively with patients, families,
and other care providers in the restoration, promotion, and maintenance
of health and quality of life
Graduates will be eligible for national certification and reimbursable professional practice. In Wisconsin, NP's can apply to become Advanced Practice Nurse Prescribers.
The program has been developed and reviewed by faculty and nationally recognized consultants.
In addition to the core content required of all students in the MS options (see master's core), the ACNP program requires course work in physiology, advanced pathophysicology, advanced therapeutics, and clinical decision making. Opportunities to integrate and apply this content in the clinical setting are provided through three precepted practicums, the last of which requires full-time clinical work for nine weeks.
